When Elvis was King and Albums were Square

Elvis Presley was born on this day in 1935. Two decades later, he would help shape a new world and a new style of music.

Yesterday we learned that the first image was transmitted to 25 cities "across the wire." This was the world that Elvis Presley knew. Just as you were born into a digital world, Elvis was born into a world that was changing.

His first album (and album cover) influenced music across the world. Twenty five years later, The Clash would release London Calling using Elvis Presley's debut album as inspiration for their cover.) Elvis was (and is) King.

Let the King influence your work today. Go shoot a photo that can be squared. Title your blog post "Squre." Post one square photo. That's it.

"Subject with Composition Rules"

For the last two weeks of 2013, your group will choose a subject and photograph it.

You can choose umbrellas, shoes, people, food, spoons or another object... as long as your group agrees on the subject. Your group will also choose three rules of composition from your list. Since each group has chosen their own list, the three rules may be different for each group, even if a group chooses the same object.

Title your blog post "Subject with Composition Rules"

In the beginning of the blog post, write the subject and list the three rules of composition. You can write a paragraph or list with bullet points.

Take photos! Select, edit and post 5-10 photos on your blog. Do not go to eleven! For this assignment, YOU must take the photos (not a group member)!

After you post your images to the Blogger, choose the best photos from this assignment and post at least one to your Weebly website. Include the website link at the bottom of this post. You should use your group as a resource when selecting your best photos for your website. In the comment section, ask each group member questions about the photos that he or she selected. Why did group members post certain photos on their blog? How did your group members decide to edit? What method did the other photographers use to select their best photos?

Influences

Photographers are influenced by other photographers, whether they realize it or not. Some of the greatest photographers were influenced by earlier photographers. For example, both Henri Cartier-Bresson and Richard Avedon site Martin Munkacsi as an important influence.

How were the first two legends influenced by the same person?

Write an essay that discusses each photographer. You may include links to their work, but only include photographs if you have permission. You may talk with your group members, but you should only share research. (I expect something close to a five paragraph essay.)

When you are finished, you may work on other assignments from this class.

What Did The Fox Say - Favorite or Best

Do you think that this photo I took at The Treasure Island Music Festival is one of my favorites or do you think it is one of my best?

What did I say? 

I learned how to use the photo-booth program from my photo students. The photograph above was one of my first photo-booth photos. I love it. Do you think it is a favorite or a best?

When I attended the Journalism Education Association National Convention in Boston, I co-presented a session about collecting and organizing best photos into a portfolio. I took this self-portrait moments before the session started. Is this photo a best or favorite? 

Selecting your favorite photographs is easier than selecting best photographs. The next photo is also a favorite, even though the light is bad and the subjects are posing.

The next few photos are more difficult to categorize. What do you think?

I like all of these photographs, but only a few of these photographs are my "best." Some might be my favorite AND my best. There is a difference in how I justify a "best" photograph.

For today's assignment, choose THREE of your photographs that you consider your best and provide three reasons to justify why the photographs are your best. Create a blog post and write three sentences for each photograph. Did you use rules of composition? Did you consider light? How does the photograph tell a story? Why is the photograph your best?

Artistic Review - Website
