Simplifying and Importing

Welcome to the second quarter!
Time is moving fast, so we are going to organize our groups to move faster too.

We will eliminate unnecessary steps so that you can learn how to take better pictures. You will also learn more about some of the terms you studied in the first part of the class.

For example, what is the difference between an element of art and a rule of composition? How would you describe each of these to someone who had just started Photo 1?

Is this a rule of composition?

Is this an element of art? Which one? Is it just one?

Did the photographer consider the rules of composition when taking this photo? Even if the photographer did not use rules of composition does the image contain elements of art?

Choose an element of art AND a rule of composition. Your group will take photos that incorporate your choices. You will return and explain your answers.

1. Include the link that everyone uses for Elements of Art (We use the list from the Getty Museum)
2. Include the link with your group's list to Rule of Composition
3. Post of Before and After photo that has been edited to improve the composition
4. Explain how the terms are different. If necessary, use the prompt below.

The photo shows (you need better word) a rule of composition, because ___________________. The photo also shows an element of art, because _______________________. The difference is ____________

Cropping for Better Composition

We are going to practice cropping photos. You will use photos that I took at the Treasure Island Music Festival last weekend. If you are my student, you have my permission to copy this photo for class.

Copy and crop the photo. Then paste both the Before and After photos on your blog and explain how the new photo illustrates a rule of composition. Write your sentence beginning with these words...

The cropped photo illustrates the ________ rule of composition, because it _____________ .

Pick any of the photos on this page. Post by the end of today!

You may also crop the photo with the kids playing with bubbles or...

the speakers with the Transamerica Pyramid in the background.

You may also crop this beautiful garbage photo. When you finish, remember to post the original photo and the finished version. At the end of the post, write a complete sentence how your new photo illustrates a rule of composition. You may use the following format.

The cropped photo illustrates the ________ rule of composition, because it _____________ .

Self Portraits - Photo Booth

Introductory Photography created self-portraits using the Photo Booth application on the school computers. The students created five different self-portraits with five different effects.

This is my self-portrait from my first computer Photo Booth session.
After groups had completed their projects, students presented their photos to the rest of the class. Students described their photos and effects. Some students also explained their choices.

I have watched many students use Photo Booth during class and I have been impressed by their creativity. Before first period, the students taught me how to use the application. I think I might like it.

Yosemite and Ansel Adams

On this day in 1890, Yosemite National Park was established, but today it is closed.

Ansel Adams photographed Yosemite for most of the time that the park existed.

Why is Ansel Adams significant?

When did he begin photographing Yosemite? How did his work change during the decades? Would Yosemite have closed today if Adams were still alive?

Find three popular Adams photos and post your links with your responses. Do not copy the photos unless you have permission to use them. (Update on 10/2... one student received permission.)
